Chapter 1    

  When it comes to starting up new businesses anywhere, online or offline, the statistics are rather grim. About 50 percent of all new businesses fail by the fourth year after their inception, and by their tenth year, only 29 percent will still be around! That means 71 percent will have failed! 

 More often than not, new businesses fail!

    You basically have a much better chance at making money by gambling in a Las Vegas casino than you have by starting up your own business! 

     Your motivation for starting an online business can vary. Some people start up a business after they get laid off; others are sick and tired of working for someone else nine to five and want more independence. Some individuals want more free time, or they may want to work from home to spend more time with their families. For some of you, it may be a lifelong dream that you just haven’t gotten around to pursuing yet. 

     If you are looking for more free time, all I can say right now is that you won’t be getting it anytime soon. Starting up a new business will take a lot of hard work and long hours. You’ll probably have to work harder than you ever have and spend more time doing so. 

     Until you get the systems down and start to make money and can outsource what you aren’t willing to do yourself, it’s going to take everything you have. Your patience, creativity, and endurance will all be taken to their limit, so be ready! 

     Lots of budding entrepreneurs believe that working in a certain field for a few years gives them sufficient expertise and experience to run their own business. Yet the truth is, most people starting a new business venture have no idea what it really takes to succeed.   The average person sees more than 3,800 marketing messages every day; that is 1,387,000 messages every year. Not only are we overwhelmed by the marketing we see, we are bored by the advertising messages we see. How many of these ads do you ever remember or really see on any given day?

   The problem is that no matter what business you are in, hundreds or even thousands of others are out there with marketing messages that attempt to get the attention of the very same person you are going after. Most of them are trying to get their messages across by using the “If they don't seem to hear us, we need to talk louder” approach. It really doesn't matter how strong, loud, or long your message is—it's all about how relevant you are to your audience!

   If you want to make your business and marketing more memorable, then your marketing needs to tell a story. Story-selling gives your brand context. It tells a narrative of how the product fits into the fabric of your consumers’ everyday lives—not just the pretty pictures, but also the honest way people interact with your product. It’s weaving your brand into the relevant passion points of your consumer’s life. For your marketing message to work, you will need to craft a unique story that speaks directly to your target market. The more specifically crafted your message is toward your audience, the more chances you will have of eliciting your desired response from them, which is for them to buy your product or service.

   There’s no doubt about it; most people do not enjoy being sold to and will resist. A customer might know your product or service and may even mentally want to buy it, but the person still might not be moved to action.
